Handmade Comb – Aluminum, Vietnam,1980

Once we were sent to the northern detention camps, up the remote mountainous areas such as Yen Bai, Lao Cai, or Hoang Lien Son, the officers of the Republic of Vietnam, like myself, hoped to return home one day. Life in prison was filled with feelings of vengeance, and we were strictly monitored, enduring extremely harsh treatment from the guards. Because of this surveillance, wanting to find materials for craft purposes was like looking for a needle in a haystack.  After several attempts, I was finally able to make an exchange to retrieve a fairly large piece of aluminum.

The aluminum plate was the size of a hat, so it was difficult to keep in the prison shelter.I decided to hide it at the edge of the forest. Then, every day, I tried to finish the “assigned work” early, so I could use the remaining time to make the comb for my beloved wife, who was struggling with her career as a teacher to raise our children back at home.

A prisoner’s life was poverty-stricken. There were no tools to chisel, cut, and file. All the tools I used were created from the pieces of metal fence lines left behind since the French colonization, and I polished the comb with forest leaves and sandy soil!

My wife is Catholic, and her Christian name is Anne. I carved all the religious images, my wife’s initials, my daughter’s initials, and my own initials on both sides of the comb.

After two months of diligent, strenuous work and with deep solicitude, I hoped that one day the comb would arrive in the hands of my beloved wife. With this handmade gift, I wanted to send along my message::  “I miss you tremendously darling. This comb is only for display and admiration not for use because it is still very sharp. It will not only pull your hair out, but it could also scrape your skin off!”

Một khi đã bị đưa vào những trại tù miền Bắc, vùng núi xa xôi như Yên Bái, Lao Cai, Hoàng Liên Sơn, thì các sĩ quan của Việt Nam Cộng Hòa như tôi không hy vong có ngày trở về. Cuộc sống tù đày bị trả thù mỗi ngày rất gắt gao, khó khăn, kiểm soát vô cùng nghiêm ngặt của đám cai tù. Vì vậy, muốn tìm vật dụng để làm thủ công thật thiên nan vạn nan. Sau bao lần cố gắng, tôi cũng trao đổi và sở hữu một miếng nhôm khá lớn.
Miếng nhôm to bằng cái mũ, khó có thể mang vào trong trại tù nên tôi đành dấu ngoài bìa rừng. Rồi buổi chiều mỗi ngày, tôi cố gắng làm cho xong sớm “chỉ tiêu”, dành thì giờ còn lại để làm chiếc lược cho kịp ngày gởi về tặng người vợ yêu quý; đang cực khổ trong nghề giáo để nuôi con dại.
Cuộc sống trong trại tù thiếu thốn, có đâu dụng cụ để đục, cắt, và dũa. Tất cả những dụng cụ đều do tôi tự chế từ những chiếc kẻm gai thời Pháp thuộc còn sót lại, và đánh bóng bằng lá rừng và đất cát!
Vợ tôi là người theo đạo Thiên Chúa Giáo, tên thánh là Anne, nên những hình ảnh về tôn giáo, tên viết tắt của vợ tôi, con tôi và tôi được khắc thành hình và chữ ở hai bên cán lược.
Sau hai tháng vất vả, tuy cực nhưng niềm thương nhớ và hy vọng  một ngày nào đó chiếc lược đến tay vợ hiền với lời dặn dò, “Nhớ em lắm… chiếc lược chỉ để ngắm chơi chứ đừng chải vì nó còn bén, sẽ rụng tóc và tróc da đầu đó nha!”
