About The Author
Lucien Trong was born in 1947 in Bentre. Assistant in agronomy at the University of Saigon. Currently assistant in France at the Tropical Forest Technical Center.
On April 30, 1975, Saigon became Ho Chi Minh City. The grip of the Communist regime on South Vietnam led to the creation of re-education camps, and massively caused the disappearance in the China Sea of hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese who fled the established regime.
The book “Enfer Rouge mon Amour” published by Editions du Seuil in 1980 is a testimony to this tragic time in Vietnam, intended to shed light on the drama behind the bamboo curtain. The Vietnamese version “Hôi ky trai cai tao *” appeared in 1983. Thirty years have passed, but these tragedies are still not recognized. We can forgive mistakes, but we cannot forget.
It seems important to us to re-establish a historical truth about this period, in the face of the disinformation of the regime in place. We also have a duty to remember those who died in the camps, those who perished at sea, the “boat people” sacrificed so that young people of the new generations of the Vietnamese diaspora can experience freedom. Beyond the war of ideologies, there remains the human dimension, and reconciliation could only be possible if everyone recognizes their wrongs. For these reasons, we have decided to put both versions of this book online.
